Designed to complement its superb line of mini-blimp surveillance assets, the THAWS drone features all of the traditional marks of excellence from Walker's design team. The drone's construction is eighty percent FRC, with foamed aluminum structural members. A Rolls-Royce RK415 high-bypass turbofan engine sits between the twin blades of the v-tail. Although the RK415's thrust output is small for this class of UAV, the drone still maintains an impressive thrust-to-weight ratio because of its composite construction. Mounted beneath the nose and protected by a clear plexiglass bay is the heart of THAWS: a Rockwell Instruments Mk V R/EO sensor package. Combining the latest in digitally enhanced optical surveillance along with a frequency-agile ISAR transmitter, THAWS is capable of providing critical real-time updates over any battlefield during any weather condition, day or night.
