Franchi SPAS-25

Franchi SPAS-25

Two years ago, at a shooting event at the Thunder Ranch training center, Commander David Ro berts of Seal Team Four ran into Benido Salerno, senior manager of Franchi Arms North Ameri ca. During the course of the conversation, Roberts mentioned that SOCOM in general and the Seals specifically were in the market for a new combat shotgun. Salerno, a veteran of several conflicts himself, expressed an interest as to what SOCOM's requirements for such a weapon would be, and Roberts promised to send him along the task specifications when they were promulgated. SOCOM eventually shelved the idea, but not before disseminating a preliminary weapon requirement and specifications (WARES) order. Having forgotten about the discussion a year earlier, Roberts was quite surprised when a special delivery from Franchi Arms ended up on his desk in late October of last year. The package contained the prototype of the SPAS-25. A straight line weapon, the SPAS lacks any sort of cosmetic fluff. The folding stock is made from ballistic zytel reinforced with a steel backbone, while both the upper and lower receivers are machined aircraft aluminum strengthend with steel inserts. The weapon comes standard with a MIL-45-H314 smartlink system. One of the more unusual features of the SPAS is its unique feed system. In their initial discussion, Roberts mentioned the usefulness of being able to choose whether or not your next round was going to be shot or shell. Franchi addressed this problem by incorporating a dual feed system into the magazine well. The specially designed twenty round magazines are actually two ten round magazines side by side. When inserted into the magazine well, a selector gate interfaces with both magazines, but allows the bolt to only draw from one at a time. The gate can be changed with either a manual lever forward of the safety, or by using the smartlink connection. The selector is automatically programmed to switch to the other magazine when the first is exhausted. This capability allows both shot and shell rounds to be loaded, or all shot or all shell depending on the mission requirements. Due to budgetary constraints, the SPAS-25 was never officially adopted by SOCOM, but reports from both official and unofficial sources indicate that it enjoys a wide popularity with the different Spec Ops branches.
