Having served as the aviation workhorse of the UCAS Navy and Marine Corps for over forty years, the venerable F/A-18 is slated to receive a complete makeover and upgrade to allow it to meet the challenges of the battlefield of the 21st century. Equipped with new three dimensional thrust-vectoring nozzles as well as the same Pratt & Whitney F119-PW-200 engines found in the F-22 Raptor, the Hornet is once again capable of out-maneuvering its opponents in all regimes of air-to-air combat. A completely new digital avionics suite coupled to the latest in expert autonavigation systems reduces pilot workload while at the same time maximizing the amount of information readily avaiable. The Hornet's original fly-by-wire system has been replaced with a triply redundant fiber optic fly-by-light system. Additionally, the laser designator/FLIR package has been upgraded to allow real-time uplinking and downlinking of targeting information from forward deployed units as well as battlefield command centers. Coupled with a weapon loadout that varies from precision guided munitions to the latest stand-off cruise and loiter weapons and an unsurpassed ability to defend itself against hostile air threats, the Hornet is a force multiplier beyond compare.
