MiL Mi-28N Havoc

MiL Mi-28N Havoc

Designed as a replacement for the aging fleet of Mi-24 Hinds and Ka-50 Black Sharks, the Mi-28 Havoc represented the first dedicated attack helicopter developed by the Soviet Republic in eight years. Taking hard learned lessons from the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, Chechnya, and Mongolia, the Havoc was designed to survive the most rigorous of combat trials. Internal components are widely spaced and doubly, even triply, redundant. The engines are mounted separately and protected by less vital systems, and the fuel tanks are contained within composite armor sleeves and are self-sealing in case of rupture. Recently, the Mil design bureau has begun to upgrade existing Mi-28s to the new Block One standards requested by the Soviet Air Command. Designated Havoc B1U, the aircraft feature a new mast-mounted millimeter wave radar, improved fourth generation turret mounted FLIR and coaxial laser designator, a strengthened main transmission, new main gearbox design, and new sweptback main rotor tip caps for noise attenuation. Avionics upgrades include two new NVG-compatible color MFDs replacing the older monochrome displays, as well as improved GPS and INS instrumentation. Once operational, the Havoc B1U will once again be able to provide Soviet forces with pinpoint accurate and devastating firepower.
