MiG-29 Fulcrum SMT

MiG-29SMT Fulcrum

In response to the increased demand from frontline Soviet forces, the MAPO design bureau has completed the Flight II upgrades to the Mig-29 a year earlier than projected. Designated the Mig-29SMT, the aircraft features a completely redesigned all glass cockpit with two full color and three monochrome MFDs. The older, problematic Phazotron radar has been replaced with the newer N021MP Topaz multi-mode pulse-doppler look down/shoot down system, featuring a synthetic aperture ground attack mode. The new radar, coupled with the gimbal mounted laser ranger finder and passive infrared search/track sensor, gives the Mig the ability to approach and engage its adversary with zero radar or radio emissions. Also, the SMT is equipped with the newer Klimov/Sarkisov RD-35 afterburning turbofan engines, each rated at 51.4 kN dry thrust. The basic design elements of the older Fulcrum remain in place: large, low-pressure tires for operating from unimproved fields, cruciform brake-chute for short field landings, inlet intake doors to prevent FOD damage to engines, and excellent maneuverability and stall characteristics. A superb example of an all-weather attack/fighter aircraft.
