Originally developed for the UCAS Special Operations Command, the RAS has become standard issue for all compatible rifles. The versatility offered by the modular system is unparalleled. The RAS consists of top and bottom halves machined from aircraft alloy that attach to the barrel nut and the handguard cap at the front sight base. Held in place by the delta ring, the RAS is also anchored by an additional locking device that's tightened against the barrel nut. The metal RAS contians four quadrant M1913 rails on which can be mounted any number of optics and accessories. These rails can also be covered by sliding polymer handguard covers if not used to mount accessories.
Compatible rifles are the Colt M23, the HK G36E, AK-97, and AK-98. Compatible submachineguns are the AK-97 SMG/Carbine, the HK227 series, as well as the Colt M4 and Underwater Carbine.
Developed specifically for the Colt M23 rifle and M4 carbine family, the SIR system consists of a free-floating handguard system on a totally rigid frame. It mounts directly on the M1913 Picatinny rail on the Colt upper receiver beginning just to the rear of the barrel nut. Here it provides its own full-length Picatinny rail one cm higher than the receiver rail, and a spring-loaded M23 rear sight mounts directly behind it. Extending forward to the front sight base, the SIR also fans out and down on either side of the barrel to the centerline of the bore. Here it stops with interrupted rails on either side. Attaching to these rails is a synthetic handguard that locks firmly in place. Along the sides as well as the bottom are mount points for Picatinny accessory rails. Besides providing an uninterrupted top rail mounting platform, the SIR System leaves the barrel totally free floating. This feature increases the accuracy as well as greatly reducing heat buildup in the barrel.
Both the RAS and the SIR system, when mounted on a compatible weapon, add a left side and right side mount point for weapon accessories. The following accessories can be mounted on RAS or SIR sidemounts: laser sight, extended laser sight, weapon-mounted laser designator, ultrasound sight, grenade link, rangefinder, flashlight, and guncam. Both RAS and SIR systems require an appropriate weapon (b/r) test against a target number of 4 to install, with a base time of 4 hours.
